South Lake Union Lunch Spots Worthy of Praise

Lunch. That magical mid-day reprieve when you can mentally check out for a moment and re-fortify your body – especially when enjoyed in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood where chefs have taken their lunch game to the next level.

In the land dominated by Amazonians and Facebook-gurus, lunch is a far cry from baloney sandwiches on white bread. From dressed up pizza and authentic Mexican tacos to Mediterranean street food and out of this world burgers, these South Lake Union eateries are throwing down some tasty plates.

Sure, traffic is historically terrible at the southern tip of the lake. But, the terrain is relatively flat and with our Lake Union terminal as your home base, walking to lunch is a breeze. So, between a Seattle Scenic Flight Tour and an afternoon at MOHAI, take a stroll to one of the best lunch spots in South Lake Union. You won’t regret it.

Close and Tasty (7 minutes or less)

Taco Chuckis

Born from a desire to bring authentic Mexican tacos to Seattle and founded in an obscure second-story Capitol Hill hole-in-the-wall, Taco Chuckis in South Lake Union has taken their game to the next level.

Dishing up their same flavor-packed selection of tacos, baby burritos and tortas for cheap, their Dexter destination is anything but shabby. Located just a two-block walk from our Lake Union terminal, this staff favorite sports an open kitchen and trendy wood tables. Of particular note are the pork tacos, topped with the house-made avocado salsa and a delightfully tangy-sweet slice of pineapple.

Ballard Pizza Co.

There are pizza joints in Seattle. And then there’s Ballard Pizza Company, another Ethan Stowell addition to the Seattle food scene. Here, slices take on a mind of their own with toppings ranging from traditional prosciutto and tomato sauce to egg and parmigiana. The really daring go for ‘The Big Moses’ – a chef’s choice concoction that typically features whatever’s freshest.

An Easy Stroll (15 minutes or less)

Bar Harbor

The menu’s not overly intense. It doesn’t need to be. You come to South Lake Union’s Bar Harbor for the rolls. And the rolls don’t disappoint. Your choice of protein (Maine lobster, Oregon bay shrimp or Dungeness crab) is served in a split-top white roll for a handheld seafood monstrosity that might make you think you’re on the east coast. Your filling is tossed in your choice of mayo (Maine Style), clarified butter (those Connecticut folks are onto something) or a bright mix of mayo, celery and chive (like the do in New England).

Starters range from Dungeness crab stuffed eggs to house-pickled seasonal veggies. Salad lovers will rejoice over the Crab & Kale Caesar, uniquely adorned with roasted beets. And those who have discovered the creamy joy of all things Burrata, will go gaga over the tangy combo of artichoke puree and sweet onion.

Homegrown South Lake Union

If you’re looking for killer sandwiches made from impeccably fresh and sustainably-sourced ingredients, Homegrown is the place for you.

This classic soup, sandwich, and salad joint isn’t going to help you pinch pennies. But if you’re looking for killer sandwiches made from impeccably fresh and sustainably-sourced ingredients, Homegrown is the place for you. The new menu includes a smoked pastrami with caramelized onions; thinly sliced steak with blue cheese (it’s exquisite); and a turkey, bacon, and avocado with roasted garlic aioli; and an inventive wasabi-infused chicken salad bowl that’s loaded with flavors and textures.

Serious Pie & Biscuit

Carb lovers rejoice. Serious Pie & Biscuit is all about the dough. Their crust goes through a 3-day cold rise. Their biscuits are packed with butter. This Tom Douglas mainstay might not specialize in regional flavors from around the globe, but it does American comfort food in a way that’ll make you sigh for a nap. The menu can change seasonally, but right now we’re particularly fans of the fried green tomato and bacon biscuit and the lamb sausage pie with parsnip cream and rapini.

Worth the Walk (23 minutes stroll or less)

Mamnoon Street

From the masterminds of Seattle’s beloved Mamnoon, this casual offshoot is dishing up the same homemade pita falafel wraps and spicy cilantro fries we’ve come to love. In the dip department, you can’t go wrong with the Shamandar Bi Tahini, a grated beet and yogurt bowl that’ll knock your socks off. The baba ghanoush is always delightful. And, if you’re a fan of traditional za’atar (a Middle Eastern spice blend that’s hard to find in its traditional form here in the Emerald City) – order the Za’atar wrap. Trust us. It’s exquisite.

What began as an experiment in excess has evolved into an eclectic (some might say kitschy) burger joint high on energy and big on portions. While the classic pickle, onion, and cheese layered patty is on the menu – loyal fans often come for the more untraditional combinations such as The Dork – where duck, pork, and a secret meat create a savory treat unlike anything else you’ll find. Of course, a Seattle burger joint wouldn’t be complete without a nod to Dick’s, but we’re particularly partial to the Burger of the Gods – a blue cheese and candied onion burger that’ll make your entire week.

Skillet Regrade

What began as a food truck known for its bacon jam and gravy-loaded hand-cut fries (aka poutine) has evolved into a series of brick-and-mortar classic dinners scattered throughout the city. It. Is. Awesome.

You can get the classic bacon jam and blue cheese burger from the Skillet’s humble four-wheeled origins. But you can also get hearty kale salads topped with fried chicken thighs and meatloaf with seasonal veggies. Breakfast here is an all-day thing, so if you’re getting a late start you can’t go wrong with the fried chicken and waffles (the optional two eggs are delightful) or ‘The Chub” a bacon-brie-egg breakfast sandwich smothered bacon jam.

Eggs and Plants

If Mediterranean food is your thing, Eggs and Plants is a must. This vegetarian breakfast and lunch destination features big, bold flavors. While you can’t go wrong with anything off their minimal menu, their fries are a sure winner. Delightfully seasoned and crispy, they’re perfect on their own or dipped in some smooth tahini-packed hummus.

What’s it Like to Take a San Juan Islands Ride-Along Flight?

There’s flying. And then there’s flying in a seaplane. Expansive skies, superlative views, and a front row seat to the controls await the adventure-hungry traveler aboard a San Juan Islands Seaplane Ride-Along.

It’s a morning to remember when you pretzel your 6-foot frame into the copilot seat of a de Havilland Beaver. (Don’t worry. There’s plenty of room in the footwell for both legs and feet once you’re in.)

Instrument Panel

The smell of old leather. The well-loved instrument panel. The rumble of the de Havilland Beaver’s radial engine as it taxis from the dock. It’s a thrill that crescendos with a takeoff over Seattle’s historic Gas Works Park and continues as the snowcapped mountains to the north, east, and west unfold around you.

Flying at roughly 100 knots, flight time to the San Juans averages 45-minutes. Depending on the weather conditions, your pilot may take you as low as 500 feet. (This is a particular treat, as the breathtaking views of the coastline are unlike anything you’ll see aboard a large airline.)

Ferry, Mountain and Seaplane

Generally, you’ll skim the skies at 1,000 – 1,500 feet. Beneath you, the coast beneath is speckled with lighthouses and rocky shores. The waterways act as a highway for ferry boats and cargo ships.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Smith Island, located in the eastern section of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The bell-shaped plot of land is a part of the San Juan Island National Wildlife Refuge. It serves as an important habitat for seabirds.

The steeped bluffs of the island have gradually eroded. They have fallen into the ocean – including the island’s original lighthouse which clung precariously to the bluff during the 1980s until the spring of 1998.

A Day in the Life of a Seaplane Pilot

Destinations throughout the San Juans can range wildly. That’s just life for a Kenmore Air pilot. They never know where they’re flying until the day before, at the earliest. The ride-along may include one stop.

Mountains

Or your trip (like mine), could include drop-offs at San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor and Orcas Island’s West Sound. It might conclude with a repositioning flight to Lopez Island’s Fisherman Bay for a pickup and then a stunning trip back to Seattle.

Shore

For some copilots, you might be treated to an up and back to the historic Roche Harbor or the ever-elegant Rosario Resort. Regardless of the destination, it’s sure to be stunning.

Additional Things to Know About a San Juan Islands Seaplane Ride-Along

  • Bring your camera. You’ll want it. I promise.
  • If you’re shooting with a DSLR and are unfamiliar with aviation photography, Shutter Priority is a good way to go.
  • Complimentary earplugs are provided by Kenmore. Wear them. The noise isn’t intolerable, but it’s certainly more comfortable when you have them in.
  • Bring sunglasses. The glare can be intense, especially if you’re sitting up front. You’ll appreciate a pair of shades. Pro tip – during the winter months, bring a hat too. In the mornings, flying back towards Seattle, the sun’s perfectly positioned to light up the world brilliantly. Unfortunately, it can also be harsh on the eyes.
  • Riding copilot isn’t guaranteed or necessary for a great flight. In fact, depending on weight dispersal needs, you pilot may ask you to sit in a different seat. But no matter where you’re sitting, you’ll have an amazing window seat view.
  • You might not be in a Beaver. Kenmore also flies de Havilland Otters. Besides the Otters being larger (they carry 10 passengers to the Beaver’s six), Otters are outfitted with turbine engines. This helps them fly slightly faster.
  • Stretch your legs after the flight with a walk to one of the best lunch spots around South Lake Union.

There’s nothing quite like shopping in the big city where flagship stores and high-end boutiques abound. Sure, Seattle’s bustling metropolis doesn’t have the same reputation as New York’s shop-till-you-drop atmosphere. But really, isn’t one urban jungle enough?

Here, in a city where fashion is in the eye of the wearer, you can peruse to your heart’s content without being overwhelmed. Whether you’re arriving by wheeled plane (for which this itinerary is specifically designed) or by seaplane, this itinerary will take you to some of Seattle’s best spots to shop and eat.

9:00 AM – Breakfast at Wandering Goose
Tucked among Seattle’s bustling neighborhoods are micro communities – city blocks and single storefronts where locals gather. Here neighborhoods blossom and restaurants thrive. While Capitol Hill is better known for its eclectic and edgy stretch of Broadway, 15th Ave. – located just a few blocks east – is a slower, definitely cleaner and more upscale option. It’s also home to Wandering Goose, a charming restaurant where church pews line the walls and lampshades are made from flour sacks. If the nursery rhymes carved into the tabletops aren’t enough to make you swoon, the food certainly will. While a collection of biscuit sandwiches may seem tempting, it’s the cast-iron plated hash options that demand attention. Topped with a poached egg, these brisket and veggie (Bubble & Squeek) or fried oyster and cured pork belly (Hangtown Fry) are comfort food that stops just short of making you want to crawl back into bed.

10:30 – Shop. Shop. Shop.
Head to Downtown Seattle where quaint boutiques are speckled among large department stores. For oodles of high-end fashion, Nordstrom carries it all with its massive city block footprint and five levels of shopping options. Flanked to the east by Pacific Place and to the west by Westlake Center, this three-block stretch along Pine St. serves as Seattle’s shopping hub. But, the plethora of options doesn’t stop there. Nearby you’ll find Niketown, Anthropologie, AllSaints and more. (The walk from breakfast is just shy of 40 minutes, but it’s all downhill. Or, you could hop on the 10 – Seattle’s Metro line which runs right past Wandering Goose. Additionally, see the “Getting Around” suggestions below.)

1:00 – Refuel
Shopping is hard work. The picking. The choosing. The trying on and trying off of clothes. While our love for elegant dresses and handsome shoes have certainly been honed over the years, nothing quite speaks to our baser instincts like the sight of meat over a roaring fire. Perhaps that’s why we breathe a little easier when we walk into chef Jason Wilson’s new Miller’s Guild and stand face-to-face with his custom-built, nine-foot Grillworks Infierno grill. Its warmth soothes our souls. So too do the wood floor and the lofted ceiling, lowered with soft dangling lights. Wilson’s hearty American fare focuses on nose-to-tail butchery with slowly braised meats and fire-roasted vegetables. The cheese packed grits and fried Brussels sprouts aren’t anything at which to sneeze either (when they’re on the menu).

2:00 – Shop. A little more.

4:00 – Rest
Take a load off. You deserve it. Oliver’s Lounge – located at the Mayflower Park Hotel – is tucked in the backside of Westlake Center. Its casual and friendly demeanor is just the thing after a hustle-bustle day filled with trips to the of dressing room.

5:00 PM – Make Your Way Back to Boeing Field
The day may be over, but the adventure’s not! Head back to Boeing Field* and enjoy your scenic flight back home.

Getting Around
This walking itinerary is designed as a leg-stretching adventure. However, getting to and from downtown definitely requires a little help. From Boeing Field you can catch a cab or order an Uber car. Uber’s easy to use smartphone app is quick, reliable and affordable.

Dog-Friendly Seattle Adventure: Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop

With a little bit of beach and a whole lot of beauty, the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop features 6+ miles of stunning views, eclectic neighborhoods, and fabulous dog-friendly stops to grab a bite.

Exploring on foot is a great way to soak in the beauty of Seattle while getting your dog some exercise. With multiple water access points and dog-friendly stops to grab a bite (or a pint), the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop is one of my favorite puppy-filled adventures. The trail’s well-marked with blue signs on red poles. It offers multiple water access points, great for thirsty dogs. And, it takes you through some of Seattle’s most eclectic neighborhoods.

So, grab your leash, lace up your tennis shoes, and get exploring.

Watch Seaplanes Take off and Land from Gas Works Park

South Lake Union’s northern edge is an urban oasis of grassy slopes, eclectic structures, and stunning skyline views. But in the early 1900s, those same grounds were a veritable maze of muddy roads and train tracks. The Seattle Gas Light Company worked around the clock passing steam over superheated coals to produce hydrogen gas. The remnants of their activity can be seen in the rust-colored tanks that have become an iconic Seattle landmark.

The 19-acre public space is ideal for picnics, kite flying, and strolling by the water. It also happens to be a prime location for watching seaplanes take off and land.

(Want to turn your casual walk into an all-day workout? Gas Works Park rests along the Burke-Gilman Trail. The trail runs all the way to Log Boom Park in Kenmore, just minutes from our headquarters.)

Before you hit the park, drop by the Essential Baking Company’s Wallingford Café to snag a pastry and coffee. Though pups can’t go inside the café, they’re more than welcome on the covered patio.

Cross the University District Bridge

Following the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop east, you’ll hop on the Burke Gilman Trail all the way to the University Bridge. The northern edge of the bridge is marked by Peace Park, a small city park best known for its full-size bronze statue of Sadako Sasaki. The statue is frequently covered in paper cranes.

Insider Tip

If you’re looking for an upscale stop to grab a bite (and maybe a drink), take N 36th St. down to N Northlake Way. The award-winning Westward is located just a one-minute walk east. The Mediterranean inspired menu is seafood heavy and the restaurant offers outdoor seating, complete with a fire pit and Adirondack chairs.

Street-End Parks and House Boats

At the base of the University Bridge, on the southern side, you’ll find the first public park with water access – South Passage Point Park. Adorned by a weeping willow and a lone picnic table, this little park is a great location for watching boats and letting your dog cool off.

As you continue to follow the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop, you’ll pass a variety of parks and houseboat communities. Fairview Parks is one of the largest of the neighborhood parks. It features a well-maintained community garden.

Of particular note is the Roanoke St. Mini Park, where Boeing launched its first airplane in 1916. The site is marked by a small plaque set within a stone bench. (Learn more about the history of seaplanes on Lake Union.)

Consider also pausing at the Lynn Street Park. This was the first street-end park developed in the city. Street-end parks (aka pocket parks) were first developed by the community to revitalize neglected areas filled with junk.

Soaking in Seattle from a Dock

Another one of my favorite stops along the way is Terry Pettus Park, where a public dock offers an amazing view of the Space Needle. There are frequently a few chairs sitting at the far end of the dock. If you time your visit right, you might even catch a few seaplanes taxiing by.

South Lake Union

At the southern end of Lake Union, you’ll pass Seattle Seaplanes before ducking down to Fairview Walkway that borders the water’s edge. Keep an eye out. A variety of wildlife is often seen, including blue herons.

Following the lake south, you’ll find two of Seattle’s best museums: Center for Wooden Boats and MOHAI. While MOHAI is not dog-friendly, the Center for Wooden Boats is! You can even take your dog out on the water with you if you want to rent a boat.

Meandering past the museums, you’ll find our Lake Union seaplane terminal, where we offer daily scenic flight tours. And….we’re a dog-friendly airline! (If you want to bring your pup, please call in advance. Certain restrictions do apply.)

And, a big shout out to our Lake Union neighbors, Argosy Cruises, who offer sightseeing cruises of Seattle from the water.

Grand Central Baking in Seattle

Insider Tip

Just a block off the trail – before the Fairview Walkway – is Grand Central Bakery’s Eastlake Café. Their scrumptious menu features pastries, sandwiches, and more. Very dog-friendly, there is a plethora of outdoor seating and you’ll often find a water bowl near the front door.

Across the Blue Bridge

With a water clearance of roughly 30 feet, the Fremont Bridge is the most opened drawbridge in the US. A double-leaf bascule bridge, it spans the Fremont Cut, connecting Fremont and Queen Anne. In its earliest days, only trolley cars were permitted to cross. However, as traffic increased, the bridge’s use transitioned into a car and pedestrian passage. In 1985, Fremont’s bohemian community voted to paint the bridge blue – making it an eye-catching site.

Between the Fremont Bridge and your return to Gas Works, you’ll pass the Fremont Brewing Company’s Urban Beer Garden. The large, outdoor patio is dog-friendly. And while the policy is ‘Bring Your Own Food,’ the on-tap selection features both the brewery’s classic pours and its latest seasonal varieties. Not sure what to get? Ask one of the brewers or servers. They’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. In all likelihood, they’ll recommend a taster flight (my personal fav.), as it allows you to sample a variety.

Located on the 73rd floor of the Columbia Center, the Sky View Observatory’s 902-foot-perch offers a view you’ll want to savor.

From the window seat of a de Havilland Beaver, you’re treated to an unparalleled view of Seattle. But it’s a moving view, which is why we’re also quite fond of the Sky View Observatory. It makes the perfect sequel to a Seattle Scenic Flight Tour.

Perched above Seattle’s original skyscraper – the Smith Tower – the Observatory’s 360-degree view is the tallest public observatory in the Pacific Northwest.

Stoll the loop and you’ll be treated to views of Mount Rainier, Elliott Bay, Bellevue, the Cascades, Mount Baker, the Olympic Mountains, and the Space Needle!

On game days, be sure to bring binoculars. The southern windows offer peak-a-boo views of the Seahawks, Mariners, and Sounders.

Along the northern facing windows, the Space Needle and Lake Union lay below. Keep an eye out. Seaplanes can often be seen coming in for landing at Lake Union.

To the west, ferries frequently make their way into and out of Elliott Bay. The green and white boats pass by the Great Wheel. At night, the Wheel’s lights change frequently, helping to light up the pier.

Throughout the observation floor you’ll find snippets about the city’s history and details about the building. For instance, the 1.5 million square foot tower boasts 8,800 windows and utilizes 2,100 hydraulic heat pumps!

The Observatory is also home to a small café. The menu features seasonal bites, house-baked pastries, and a collection of local draft beers and wines. Talk about an amazing spot for a pre-dinner cocktail!

Mount Rainier, the Pacific Northwest’s Quintessential View

Witnessing the towering peak of Mount Rainier is a quintessential Pacific Northwest moment. And, there’s no better view than from the window seat of a 10-passenger Cessna Caravan.

Born more than half a million years ago, Mount Rainier stands at a staggering 14,410 feet. That makes Seattle’s reigning giant nearly three miles tall!

The massive mountain dwarfs the other peaks in the Cascade Range. (They summit at a mere 6,000 feet.) This ice-covered monstrosity is jaw-droopingly beautiful, dominating Seattle’s skyline and beyond.

Home to 25 glaciers, Mount Rainier’s massive collection of ice spans roughly 36-square-miles. That’s the largest collection of permanent ice on a single US mountain south of Alaska!

Birthed From Rock and Ash

Get up close and personal with Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier is not the result of a single eruption. Rather, it’s a stratovolcano – a cone of stone gradually formed by intermittent seismic eruptions and lava flows.

Scientist estimate the first eruptions began roughly 500,000 years ago. The cone likely topped out at 16,000 feet above sea level. However, a massive eruption reduced the giant’s stature.

In addition to losing some of its height, the collapse created a 2-mile diameter depression on the northeast face. It sent a 100-foot-high mud wall surging from the mountain. Known as the Osceola Mudflow, the mud kept running for 125-square-miles until it reached the waters of Puget Sound.

Mount Rainier hasn’t had a major eruption in nearly 1,000 years. While the sleeping giant has had smaller eruptions – resulting in equally scaled down mudflows and floods – it’s considered dormant.

The downtime has been kind to its steep hillsides and rolling valleys. Mount Rainier National Park’s lush landscape has become a destination for outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. Here, wildflowers abound and forests tower.

Fly Face-to-Face with a World Wonder

Stare Face-to-Face with Mount Rainier

In 1792, English explorer George Vancouver named Mount Rainier after his fellow navigator – Admiral Peter Rainier. However, Native Americans originally named it “Tahoma,” meaning “the mountain that was God.”

And when sitting face-to-face with it – you’ll understand why. The sheer rock walls of volcanic stone are layered with massive sheets of ice. Below its impressive crest rests a lush tree line studded with glacier-feed lakes.

And as if staring at the giant doesn’t make you feel small enough, ski resorts on the surrounding peaks reveal ant-like men below. Its size is humbling. This is one of Mother Nature’s true wonders. And from a window seat on a Cessna Caravan, you can get up close and personal.

The cratered top of Mount St. Helens steams periodically, reminding those who dare to explore its slopes that this volcano is still very much alive.

Like a napping giant, Mount St. Helen’s mouth-like crater spews plumes of lava-heated smoke. It’s a reminder that, even though the peak hasn’t had a major eruption for more than 40 years, it’s not done.

May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens forever changed the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. While its eruption was small by volcanic standards, the force of its blast was the largest and most destructive in US history.

The eruption collapsed the north side of the mountain, creating the biggest recorded landslide in modern times. The debris and mud (known as lahar) flowed all the way to the Columbia River, taking it 17 miles from the mountain and over terrain that was 600 feet deep in places.

During its explosion, Mount St. Helens lost 1,300 feet of its elevation. The formerly symmetrical cone became a 2-mile-wide crater. Today, its edges remain jagged and haunting in their beauty.

The blast generated roughly 500 times the force of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It claimed 57 lives. The ash plume rose 15 miles high. And, the lahar destroyed roads, forests, and homes for more than 185 miles.

Today, scientists consider Mount St. Helens a world-class outdoor laboratory. It’s one of the few instances in modern times where we have been able to witness old-growth forests begin to re-establish their roots.

As the eco-system continues to recover, the landscape is the epitome of re-birth. Plants that can survive off nitrogen absorbed through their air rather than the soil began to first take root – like the Prairie Lupine. Today, vast hillsides are scattered with wildflowers and prairie land. And, insects and animals have returned.

The eruption left the mountain at a staggering 8,363 feet. It created a horseshoe-shaped crater. At its center rests a lava dome, from which plumes of superheated steam erupt.

Scientists have confirmed that fresh molten rock has been recharging the volcano since 2008, building a magma reservoir. While there’s no accurate prediction of when, it’s safe to say that the giant will indeed wake.

The only question is, will you see the steam rise before it erupts again?

I love a good field trip. I love to eat. And, I love to spend the day with folks who are downright passionate about food and travel. All the above bookended by round-trip seaplane flight with Pretty Fork? To say I was excited, doesn’t even come close.

The day started at Kenmore Air’s Lake Union terminal where I met with Joey from Pretty Fork. Instantly I knew the day would be filled with laughs and easy conversation. The rest of the party arrived, Joey in introduced himself and talked a little about what to expect from the experience:

The first rule of Pretty Fork Events is you don’t talk about Pretty Fork Events. The destination is a secret. If anyone asks, you just went for a hamburger.

Everyone felt like they were in this adventure together. Touché Joey.

The guests listened on as Joey told them that we were headed someplace in the San Juans via seaplane, however the exact location was a surprise. The excitement grew as we walked down the dock to the awaiting de Havilland Otter Seaplane. Another stroke of luck, we were flying with Anna on Kenmore Air’s custom painted Orca Whale Seaplane. Pilot Anna gave a quick, safety briefing and within moments we were off the dock. The plane glided along Lake Union and then took flight. We were off to our secret destination.

The plane ride was spectacular. It was clear for miles. The mountains connected to the waterways and the little islands dotting the vast open water. Passengers were pulling out the Kenmore Air route maps and pointing out landmarks all the while trying to figure out the big secret.

The plane eventually turned in toward Orcas and gently set down outside of Rosario. We taxied in to find a host waiting with our first course, Oysters and Bubbly on the dock. We disembarked the plane and were greeted with a chilled glass of bubbly and a quick introduction to oysters and how to enjoy them Northwest Style. After a few slurps we walked up the dock toward Rosario Resort with excited anticipation on what was coming next.

We were greeted upon arrival by the General Manager of the resort, Christopher Peacock. He invited us to relax for a few minutes in the music room, where a 1900 Steinway Grand Piano rested. After a brief historical overview of the property, Christopher treated us to an original piece he had composed. It was heavenly.

Once Christopher had us at the brink of tears, he invited us to tour the library. While we’d been impressed by the piano, we were blown away by the resort’s 1913 Aeolian organ. Built into the structure of the room, it had 1,972 pipes! And, we were once again delighted by a musical piece. From music and history, we went to the dining room.

The excitement was building.

This is what we came for and yet this trip had already been so incredible. Was the meal going to be a sensory masterpiece to match the flight, the champagne arrival and the divine musical presentation?

We were seated in our own private space nearby the windows and the kitchen, fully immersed in the beauty of our destination. I loved looking out to the sea and then through the glass to the kitchen to watch the mastery unfold.

Executive Chef Raymond Southern introduced himself and presented us with the first course; Burrata and Famer John’s Tomatoes, a gorgeous local tomato topped with creamy, tangy burrata and tempura arugula. This simple dish answers the question, “How does a chef make a salad better than me?”

For starters, a chef can tempura a leaf of arugula that he grew 20 feet from his kitchen. To round out this course, we sipped on cucumber lemon soda with an arugula crema. So good. What’s next? Mussels in Curry

Mussels in Curry. This was another play on local bounty. The mussels had been harvested from Penn Cove and were served with local apples, mint grown in the chef’s garden and an apricot shrub. It was fabulously comforting with a zesty summer fruit finish. We then tucked into a bright salad picked from the chef’s garden that morning and offered simply with a light spritz of lemon and olive oil. (Can you see the pattern? Chef’s garden. Local products. Incredibly fresh ingredients.)

The savory courses began with rabbit. (It was local of course.) Joey playfully asked the table how many had tried rabbit; not a big show of hands. When the dish arrived, it was a perfect portion of warm, earthy comfort starring chanterelle mushrooms and rabbit loin in a delightful marsala sauce.

Not to worry Pacific Northwesters, the final savory course was our local hero, halibut. Gorgeous and simple presentation, chef Raymond knows how to let the halibut be the star.

Dessert was a masterpiece; a simple fried squash blossom filled with pineapple cheesecake. It was just two bites of sweet satisfaction. Amazing.

Shortly after dessert, it was time to applaud the glorious meal and the talented chef and head off to catch our flight back to Seattle.

This was an experience that literally hit all the senses. There was mystery, excitement, an amazing view, a unique culinary experience of local goodness served up by a talented chef and his team, an unexpected musical performance and a tour of a historic mansion all wrapped up with a seaplane flight.

I have lived in Seattle my entire life and this was a hometown experience I knew was going to be fun. However, I didn’t expect it to be breathtaking, amazing and unquestionably one of the coolest things I’ve done here.

A bird’s-eye view is a great way to get your bearings when you’re in a new place. It lets you wrap your head around the neighborhoods and topography. But after you’ve drunk in the lakes and building tops, neighborhoods and needle points (hello Space Needle!), putting boots on the ground gives you a bit more intimate look.

In Seattle, we’re blessed with a plethora of urban hikes. As the city’s complicated geography was developed, stairways were carved into steep hillsides, connecting neighborhood to neighborhood. Today, these same pedestrian pathways offer the ideal way to explore – while also stretching your legs (and racking up a few thousand steps, if you’re into that sort of thing).

The Lake Union – Kerry Park Loop features big climbs, long descents, and a veritable feast of views. I like to begin this urban trek at Kenmore Air’s Lake Union terminal (A). It’s less than a half-mile stroll to the Westlake Pedestrian Bridge.

Spanning 130 feet, the Westlake Pedestrian Bridge (B) stretches over Westlake Avenue. With its large support beams and long cable-stays that echo the masts of sailboats in the marina below.

On the west side of the bridge, a series of switchback stairways lead to Dexter Avenue. They border a commercial building. At the top of flight small verandas offer exceptional views of Lake Union, downtown, and Capitol Hill.

Cross over Dexter and follow the Galer Street stairs up and over Aurora Avenue. Take a quick jaunt south on Taylor Avenue North, west on Lee Street, and south on 5th Avenue North. You’ll arrive at the edge of Bhy Kracke Park (C). This sliver-sized park is nestled among residential houses. Follow its short trail system for a lovely way to keep climbing upward. Don’t be surprised to find families tucked along the path enjoying a picnic or couples enjoying a lazy stroll. At its peak, an expansive view of the city unfolds.

Take Comstock Place to Bigelow Avenue North and head southwest. Take a left on 3rd Avenue North’s pedestrian-only stairway and west onto Prospect Street until you hit 2nd Avenue North (D). Take a left. This small 75-step stairway is the oldest in Seattle. It was built in 1904. At its base, rests a large white house that looks like it was plucked from a storybook. And, it very well might have been. Check the Little Free Library that rests just beyond its gate. You might find yourself lost in a story.

Continue south on 2nd for one block and then head west on Ward for one block. Heading back north up Warren Avenue North, take a left on head Highland Drive. (You’ll now be headed west.) In four blocks, you’ll reach Kerry Park (E) – the ultimate star of this urban hike.

While it spans just 1.26 acres, Kerry Park offers one of the best views in all of Seattle. Located on the south slope of Queen Anne Hill, you’ll be able to see the Space Needle, Key Arena, and Safeco Field. Elliot Bay will rest beneath you and West Seattle will stretch out to the south. Ferry boats will come and go. You might see large shipping vessels coming into port and dinosaur-esc cranes unloading them. On a clear day, you’ll even be able to see Mount Rainier.

Once you are finished soaking in the view, follow 3rd Street West north to West Galer Street and head east. You’ll run into Queen Anne Avenue, where a plethora of great restaurants and quaint coffee shops reside. (This is a great spot for a break, if you want one.)

From Queen Anne an elegant stairway connects West Galer Street to Galer Street. In three more blocks, you’ll come to Old Queen Anne High School (F). Built in 1909, this magnificent landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places. While the high school closed in 1981, the building was converted into condos and remains occupied today.

Take a left on Nob Hill Avenue North, a left on Garfield Street, and a right on 3rd Avenue North. Along the quiet residential street, you might see kids playing basketball and 20-somethings walking their dogs. You might find grandmas tending their plants and workmen repairing a broken fence. This is Seattle, quiet and quaint.

At Howe swing east and then take a quick left on Nob Hill. In two blocks you’ll find an eclectic Victorian-style cottage (G). The yard features eccentric statues and the house itself has been painted a breathtakingly wonderful collection of colors.

Continue along the path by taking a right on Crockett Street, right on 4th, and left on Newton. At Bigelow head south for one block. A small 60-step stairway will connect you to 5th Ave North. Follow 5th to Taylor, Taylor to Galer (H) and Galer back to Westlake .

15 Minutes to a Remote Fly Fishing Excursion

Kenmore is known for jetting folks up to the San Juans or popping them over to Victoria. We do both of these things. And they’re great. We fly to a whole slew of regularly scheduled destinations. But, we also do so much more.

Our water-landing babies take adventure hungry men and women into remote regions where cars are often non-existent and nature is front and center. We get them there quickly, bypassing ferry lines and busy airport terminals. We take them there with breathtaking views and thrilling takeoffs and landings.

Just where can you go? Darn near anywhere. The folks in our Charter service department are fantastic. They’ll work closely with you to plan the perfect trip.

For example, you could take the fly fishing trips Orvis is leading. While we offer seasonal trips to fly fishing lodges such as Blackfish Lodge and Franks Fishing Lodge, these are extended stay trips.

These fly fishing excursions get you out of town and doing the important stuff (aka casting your line) in no time. Typically, selected destinations are not accessible by car and are at least a two-hour drive from the Seattle/Bellevue area.

The action-packed days begins with a check-in at Kenmore Air Harbor where you’ll get into your wading gear and double check your supplies. Led by fly fishing expert Leland Miyawaki and piloted by Kenmore Air pilot and fly fishing enthusiast, Larry Graff, you’ll set off for a roughly 15-minute trip to the Southsound. The seaplane taxis to the beach and you step, quite literally, into the water. It’s that quick.

How advanced do you have to be? Leland asks his fly fishers to be intermediate to advanced casters. He’s available to help with rigging, fly choices, presentations techniques, fish handling skills, and education on the fishery.
