Washington’s gourmet archipelago is undoubtedly known for its sun-filled summer days and fruit-laden farmers markets. But don’t assume this sweet little paradise closes up shop during the winter. While some businesses and residents like to hibernate until spring, there are still plenty of relaxing things to do on San Juan Island during the holidays.

In fact, visiting the San Juan’s during the winter might even be your favorite! The slower pace and lack of crowds give you more freedom to linger and enjoy your getaway. Not to mention, getting to San Juan Island from Seattle is as easy as catching a 45-minute scenic flight from Boeing Field!

5:00 PM Dinner at Friday Harbor House Restaurant

Friday Harbor House Dinner

Perched on a bluff beside Overlook Park in the heart of downtown Friday Harbor, the Friday Harbor House Restaurant has one of the best views in town. On a clear evening, you’ll be treated to the glow of fading sunshine as it glistens off the water and lush shoreline of Brown Island across the way. Dinner here is exquisite, with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Favorites include the Smoked Salmon Board with a blackberry glaze and a trip cream brie, house-made crab pasta in a poblano cream sauce, and the duck fat country potatoes.

The breakfast menu isn’t big at Tenth House. It typically features less than 10 options. Still, you’ll likely have a hard time deciding. Sweet breakfastgoers will vacillate between custard french toast against lemon ricotta pancakes. Savory indulgences range from eggs poached in a spicy tomato sauce with garlic confit (aka Eggs in Purgatory) to steak with two eggs your way and a house-made salsa verde.

7:30 PM Nightcap at Friday Harbor SKYBAR

A bit of a hidden enclave, the Friday Harbor SKYBAR is frequented by locals. It features firepits, heaters, and an open tent, even during the most challenging seasons. The only rooftop bar in town, it’s best known for fabulous wine flights, hand-picked by the knowledgeable sommelier and owner, Bex.

The bar is open year-round. But word-to-the-wise, dress for the weather. It can get chilly during the winter months.
